10 Common Mistakes That Thwart Success
One way to increase your chances of achieving success, however you define it, is to avoid common mistakes that people make in their search for success. In this article we will point out 10 common mistakes that thwart success and that you should avoid:
1. Not Getting Educated
Education is paramount to success. We are not just talking about formal education, which is an important component of one’s career development. We are talking about getting educated in whatever area you want to excel in, through whatever means are available to you, whether it is through formal classes, self-study, practice or experimentation. The key is to become a master of your domain.
2. Being Inflexible
Flexibility is extremely important in your search for success. You must be able to adapt to changes as they occur, as changes are certainly going to try to put a hole through your success plans. If you are rigid in your thinking and not open to different ways of doing things, you will likely struggle in a world that is becoming increasingly more competitive and changing every day.
3. Trusting the Wrong People
You must know who to trust. Not everyone is worthy of your trust and some people may use your trust to hurt you. Knowing who to trust is not easy. It comes with experience. But even the most experienced business people sometimes make mistakes trusting the wrong people.
4. Feeling Entitled
No one is entitled to success. Success must be earned. The moment you start feeling entitled is the moment you will fall short on your motivation and on your corresponding efforts. This is a sure way to guarantee failure.
5. Giving Up Easily
It’s been said many times that success requires persistence. Many successful people went through what many would consider ‘failures’ that were actually learning experiences that eventually lead to success. Successful people don’t give up easily. They persist through adversities and setbacks until they succeed.
6. Losing Faith
In order to persist your must keep the faith. Never lose faith in your ability to succeed. Try different techniques, get more education, change your approach as necessary, but never lose faith in yourself.
7. Comforting Yourself with Excuses
Excuses can be very comforting, and as such, they can be very dangerous. It’s easy to fall into the temptation of coming up with endless excuses for why you have not achieved what you desired. When you start hearing yourself come up with endless excuses, raise a red flag and reexamine your thinking process. There may be very legitimate reasons why you may have fallen short of your success goals, and you shouldn’t be afraid of rationalizing those reasons. The problem is when the excuses become a habit. If you stop to reflect upon your situation you will know how to differentiate between excuses and legitimate learning experiences.
8. Mismanaging Risks
Anything that is worthwhile pursuing requires a certain level of risk. If you are ultra conservative and never take any risks, it is unlikely that you will achieve anything worthwhile. On the other hand, if you take too many risks you may quickly blow your chances of getting what you want. The key is to find balance and take risks that you understand and are comfortable with.
9. Not Setting Smart Goals
Goals are critical to success. In the article Smart Goals for Your Success we discussed how to set up goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Too many people make the mistake of setting up goals that are not well defined and that do not follow the five components that make up the SMART acronym, usually leading to disappointments.
10. Ignoring the Signals
If things are not going well, you will know. Call it intuition, sixth sense, gut feeling, or whatever term you like. The important thing is to learn to ‘read’ those signals and know when to make changes to your plans. Being stubborn and ignoring the signals will most likely work against you.
Avoid these 10 common mistakes and you will increase your chances of achieving success.

I agree with the list. Our success often depends on our willingness to work and dedication. It’s good that we think about the factors first before we make decisions
