10 Simple Rules of Success for When You Are Under Attack

During your search for success you will most likely run into difficult situations.  You may even come under attack.  The reasons can be many, and it is not always under your control.  It is important to reflect upon how to react when this situation arises, as it will certainly happen to the best of us.  Here are 10 simple rules that will contribute to your continued success when you come under attack:

    1. Act with Integrity

When you are under attack it is extremely important to take the high road.  You may be tempted to strike back using some of the same means that were used against you, but that is the worst thing that you can do.  Stay true to your word and show that your integrity is worth more than picking a fight with someone whose values are not as honorable as yours.

    2. Keep your Cool

In order for you to maintain your integrity you have to keep your cool.  If you are about to strike back with fury and anger, stop.  Take a deep breath.  Take a time out and let yourself get back to your normal rational state of mind.  Acting in haste because of your anger will not make anything better.  In fact, most likely it will make it worse.

    3. Respect Others

Even when under attack you must still respect others.  If others are being disrespectful to you, that is their business.  You should not lower yourself to their level.

    4. Defend Your Rights

Having said all that, it is important that you defend your rights.  Make your point firmly but without disrespect and anger.  Letting others bully you or walking away in fear will only set the precedence for others to do the same to you.  Stand your ground with character and confidence and others will think twice before they strike.

    5. Assess the Situation from a Values Based Perspective

If the issue you are dealing with is a lost cause, is it worth picking a fight just to prove that you were right?  What value will you gain from engaging with your attacker?  There are times when it is better to walk away, not because of fear, but because you consciously decide that walking away has more value to you than engaging in a senseless fight.  Notice that this is much different than the item above where you decide to stand your ground in order to defend your rights.

    6. Focus on What is Most Important to You

What is truly important to you?  Your family?  Your friends?  Your health?  Your material possessions?  How will this attack impact the things that you truly value?  If it will potentially negatively impact these things then maybe it is worth your effort to defend them.  If not, why spend any effort on an attack that is completely meaningless?

    7. Reach Out to Family and Friends for Support

When under attack, it is important to have the support of family and friends.  The attacker may be trying to lower your self-esteem, make you feel vulnerable and take advantage of a particular weakness.  At these times it is important to be reminded of your strengths and to have someone who will provide you with moral support.

    8. Seek Your Faith

Many of us find answers to difficult situations in our faith.  Being under attack may be one of the best times to get in touch with your faith and remind yourself of the teachings that guide your values and beliefs.

    9. Turn it Into an Opportunity

Sometimes an attack may be an opportunity.  It may come from a person or organization from whom you were long due to cut loose.  It may be an inspirational moment for you to gather strength and fight for that old dream that had been put on hold for a long time.  Or it may be an opportunity for you to reset expectations, reevaluate your situation, or even change your life.

    10. Let Bygones be Bygones

Last but not least, do not let an attack be a source of pain and frustration for a long time.  Deal with it when it happens, but once it is over, let bygones be bygones.
