The Sooner You Face Reality, The Sooner You Will Find Success

Reality is not always easy to deal with.  You may have a lingering problem that you know needs to be addressed, but for some reason or another you keep on procrastinating making the tough choice, having the difficult discussion, or confronting the situation.  Not facing reality may be more comfortable in the short-term, but in the long-term you will regret not dealing with it earlier.  Here are a few examples of tough situations that should be dealt with upfront:

Your Job Situation is Not Ideal

Sometimes you know that there is something wrong with your job.  You are not getting the recognition you deserve, you are being passed for promotion, or you just don’t feel like you fit in.  Many times the situation is not bad enough for you to do something about it, so you just delay the inevitable, which is lack of motivation, deteriorating performance, and eventually an exit that is less than ideal.  The sooner you deal with the issues at hand, the better off you will be.  Delaying the inevitable just aggravates the situation.

    You Have a Health Issue

If you know you have a health issue, you should address it as soon as possible.  Not getting the proper treatment is likely to make the situation worse, and could even be fatal.  Don’t let excuses get in the way of managing your health.

Someone on Your Team Is Not Performing

We often work in teams in order to accomplish things.  Teamwork is only effective if everyone on the team is pulling their weight and making contributions.  It is very demoralizing when it is obvious that a team member is not putting in the effort required to get the work done like everyone else.  When this situation arises, it is better to deal with the issue head on and as early as possible.  Be firm about the expectations of that team member and give the person a chance to make changes.  If you don’t see improvements it is better to separate the person from the team.

    You Are in Debt

Debt is a tough problem that most people don’t like dealing with.  They know they are being ripped off by the credit card companies.  They know they need to cut back on their consumption in order to get back to a healthy financial state.  Yet, most people struggle with facing the reality that unless they do something about their spending habits, they will keep on digging themselves into a bigger and bigger hole.  The sooner you deal with the debt problem, the less painful it will be to address the issue.

    Your Business Is Not Profitable

Starting a business requires a lot of effort and sometimes capital.  For as much as you may love your business, you need to keep in mind that the main purpose of a business is to be profitable.  If the business is not profitable, as painful as it may be, you may have to let go of it.  You need to know when it is time to cut loose.  Sometimes businesses need time in order to grow and become profitable.  But just as often they will not improve regardless of how much time you wait.  Knowing when to close the doors to your business is an important skill that every entrepreneur should know well.

    Your Investment Has Gone Bust

Admitting that you have made a bad investment is not always easy.  Sometimes people hang on to bad investments for too long in the hope that somehow the investment will turn around miraculously.  The sooner you face the reality of you investment situation the better.  Cut your losses and move on.  Don’t hang on to a bad investment because you are afraid of admitting the mistake that you have made.

Success is not just about winning, getting it right, or coming out ahead.  Success is also about recognizing the situation for what it is, taking corrective action, and moving on.  Don’t delay making the tough choices or decisions.  Face reality sooner rather than later and success will also likely come sooner.
