Two Success Lessons from Recent Media Quotes
Once in a while you find real gems in the answers provided in media interviews with well known persons. This week there were two such gems that are worth pointing out. They allude to some very important principles of success that have been discussed extensively on this site.
The first one is from Will Smith on an interview with 60 minutes. Will talks about the impact that his innate talent and work ethics has had on his success. In the article What is the Secret of Success? we explored the issue of effort versus natural talent extensively. Let’s see what Will has to say about his personal talent and work effort:
“I’ve never viewed myself as particularly talented. I’ve viewed myself as… slightly above average in talent… Where I excel is with (a) ridiculous, sickening work ethic. While the other guy’s sleeping, I’m working!…”
Success Lesson Number 1: The next time someone tells you that there is no point in working hard for success because you don’t have talent, remember that the very people that appear to be extremely talented, like Will Smith, in reality work very hard. What appears to be pure talent on the surface, is build on a foundation of hard work that you don’t realize.
Another memorable quote this week came from former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee who has recently emerged as a strong contender for the Republican nomination despite his humble campaign funds. Huckabee draws an analogy between his campaign and the flight of a bumblebee:
“It’s said that, according to the law of aeronautics and the wing-span and circumference of the bumblebee, it is aeronautically impossible for the bumblebee to fly. However, the bumblebee being unaware of these scientific facts, goes ahead and flies anyway.”
Success Lesson Number 2: The next time someone tells you that what you are trying to do is impossible, and that you can’t achieve success, remember the bumblebee, and do it anyway. If the bumblebee were to listen to the “experts”, it would be convinced it couldn’t fly and might not even try. But since the bumblebee does not know any better, it flies anyway, defying the laws that say that it is not possibly for it to fly.
Take these two lessons to heart in your search for success.

I agree with the author that hard work plays an important role to success. You never get success by a single snap. Success is earned through extensive labor and painstaking.
