Redefining Personal Success
The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch once again brought on an impressive panel of experts to discuss another topic of high interest to the readers of Worldwide Success. The conversation was about redefining personal success and the panelists included Mel Robbins, the host of the radio show “Make It Happen with Mel Robbins”, as well John Assaraf and Murray Smith, authors of the book The Answer: Grow Any Business, Achieve Financial Freedom, and Live an Extraordinary Life.
So, how do you redefine yourself to achieve personal success? Before we attempt to answer this question we must define was personal success is. In this case, personal success is about doing what you love. It is about waking up every morning looking forward to the day ahead. It is having so much fun in your day-to-day that time goes by so fast you wish you could just stop the clock.
Redefining yourself requires change. And change is a process that has a higher chance of success if it is managed properly. The guidelines provided by the life coaches brought to Donny Deutsch’s show will help you achieve the kind of change you may be looking for in your life. Here they are:
Take Baby Steps
Mel Robbins is a firm believer in taking baby steps. If there is something different you want to do in your life, don’t take a leap of faith and jump with both feet. Instead, she advises, start leaning towards the desired state. She mentions running as an example. Suppose you’ve always dreamt of becoming a marathon runner, how would you go about doing it? Start by behaving as if you were already a marathon runner, she says. Get the type of running shoes that marathon runners use. Go out and start running a short distance to start you off. But do it consistently. Come rain or sunshine, go out and run everyday. Why? Because that is what marathon runners do. You can start slowly, but your goal is to immediately start imitating the people that are already doing what you want to do.
Have Trusted Advisors
Let’s face it, change is hard. You will need one or more trusted advisors who can support you during your change journey and who can provide you with advice based on their own experience.
Give Yourself a Timeline
Just as with the setting of any other goal, you need to give yourself a timeline for getting your personal success change accomplished. Otherwise, your change quest becomes nothing more than an empty dream that is never realized. Give yourself the right amount of time to accomplish your change and monitor your progress throughout.
Don’t Be a Kamikaze Dreamer
Change does not mean radical, irresponsible behavior. Kamikaze dreaming can be fatal and could end up causing you pain and disappointment. Take a gradual approach to change, something that will not ruin your finances or your health.
Be Persistent
It’s been said many times before that persistence is the key to success. If you fail, try again. Keep working towards achieving your desired state, learn from your mistakes, and eventually you will get there.
Once you make your desired change and reach you personal success end-state you need to have a plan for sustaining your success. It is important to continue using your group of mentors to guide you through the inevitable bumps on the road.
Occasionally take a pulse on your state of happiness. If you start feeling boredom, or if something starts telling you that you are no longer having the same sense of joy that you had when you started changing, maybe it is time to change again. Keep talking to yourself because as you very well know, success is a moving target.
