How to Succeed like a CEO

We recently talked about how much money CEOs make.  As you can see from that article, CEOs live a very plush life, specially the ones running Fortune 500 organizations. But even the CEOs of smaller companies for the most part make enough money to live a very comfortable life.  In order to be rewarded with the power and riches that come with this job, CEOs must know a thing or two about success.  In fact, if you study the decisions made by CEOs, their leadership styles, and many of the lessons that they learned throughout their career, you will likely become more successful yourself.

So how do CEOs get to be who they are?  How do they obtain such deep knowledge of success?  For one, they work their way up, usually gaining more responsibility as they progress in their career.  Along the way, they are surrounded by successful people that they can learn from, and quite often they are groomed by the smartest business people in the corporate world.  In the article How to Become CEO – CEO Factories, we list out the best places for CEOs to start their career so that they can get the proper training and experience required to reach the top job.

But just because you work in one of these CEO factories does not mean you will make it to CEO.  CEOs have very distinct traits, and not everyone is cut out to become one of these powerful figures.  If you want to learn more about these traits, be sure to check out one of our most popular articles, Corporate Career Success – How to Become CEO, where we discussed in detail what it takes to reach the top job of a corporation.

But this article is not about how to become a CEO.  It is about how to succeed like one.  Success takes many forms and definitions, but most CEOs are well suited to provide success advice that can be used in any field of endeavor.  Success in any area requires relationships, having a set of values that guide your decisions, having a great team that you can lead, and much more.  In one other article we talked about what really matters for success according to one CEO.  But what if you could learn about proven strategies for success from not just one CEO, but a thousand of them?

If this seems intriguing to you, you are in for a treat.  On August 17, 2009 Andrew Davidson will release his book 1,000 CEOs.  In the book Davidson reveals the profiles of 1,000 CEOs, including a brief biography, their traits (which you should compare to the traits discussed in Corporate Career Success – How to Become CEO), their practices and behaviors as well as their words of wisdom about how to succeed in the business world.

If you have the ambition of someday becoming a CEO, you cannot miss the wealth of information that can be gained by studying the people that have already achieved what you are aspiring to become.  All this information is condensed for you in one volume full of wisdom from the world’s top business leaders.

But even if you never dream of getting the top corporate job, you can still benefit by learning from the wisdom and experience of some of the most successful people in the business world.

  1. being a good and successful leader, you must learn first how to become a good follower..

and always think how you will gonna take care of your followers or your team member, in order for them to give out their best talent on your company…

  2. Succesful traits can be learned from others who have made it…and .. Love what you do…and become good at it…and help others on your team carry out your companies objectives. Way Cool.

  3. I believe in surrounding myself with successful people and doing this you will emulate them and become successful.

  4. Great comments. You absolutely need to know how to take care of your followers, love what you do, and surround yourself with successful people in order to be a successful leader.

  5. To become a leader, we must first understand those who follow us. We must learn from our superiors and hopefully use them into climbing the career ladder.

  6. Basically you need a degree in Bcomm marketing of course. The only problem of the whole matter is that you only use about 23% of the stuff you learn in real life. The only true degree you actually need is good people skills and the motivation to make money.

  7. There is no hard and fast rule for becoming a CEO. An advanced degree can certainly be helpful, just as a history of progressively more responsible positions and successes can be.
